UMF® Manuka Honey

Manuka FlowerUMF® Manuka Honey is a delicious and natural means of providing your body’s immune system with an antioxidant and antibacterial support. It is highly sought after for its antibacterial properties, assistance with digestive health and the distinctive Taste of New Zealand it provides. UMF® Manuka Honey is produced by honeybees from New Zealand’s native Manuka (Leptospermum scoparium) an abundant flowering bush covered in white or pink flowers in spring and summer that grows wild in the subtropical North Island.

Recent laboratory studies have established that particular “Active Manuka Honey”, labelled as UMF® Manuka Honey, contains natural compounds with powerful antibacterial properties. Further scientific research and clinical studies are underway to establish where this particular honey could be used in clinical situations. A belief that consumption of UMF® Manuka Honey supports the body’s immune system is hundreds of years old as the indigenous Maori people of New Zealand have used the plant for health purposes and helping natural wound healing since pre-European times.

The Unique Manuka Factor (UMF®) of Manuka Honey measures the antibacterial activity of the honey and each batch is laboratory tested and the Manuka honey’s antiseptic potency level measure against a standard reference antiseptic (phenol) to determine its potency. Manuka Honey which is found to have the Unique Manuka Factor is labelled  as UMF® 5+, UMF® 10+ and UMF® 15+ accordingly. UMF® 15+ is equivalent to a 15% solution of phenol in terms of antiseptic potency.
